Malda District Hospital Blood Bank—officially known as the Malda Medical College & Hospital Blood Bank—is a government-operated blood center located within the campus of Malda Medical College and Hospital, India. It serves as the principal blood supply facility for Malda and the neighboring districts of Gour Bengal, providing critical support to emergency, trauma, and surgical cases.

Background

The blood bank originated when Malda District Hospital was upgraded to Malda Medical College in 2008. Operating under the supervision of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, it ensures the availability of safe blood and blood components for both inpatients and external transfusion needs.

Operations and Facilities

Located at Singatala, Uma Roy Sarani, English Bazar, the facility operates 24 hours a day. It maintains stocks of all major blood groups and employs advanced screening methods for transfusion safety. Dr. Mozibul Hoque heads the department. The unit is connected with the hospital’s emergency and maternity wings to facilitate rapid response to medical emergencies.

Administration and Compliance

In late 2025, local media reported temporary licensing issues due to delayed renewal procedures initiated with the Drug Control Department. Hospital authorities confirmed the renewal process was underway, highlighting the bank’s continued essential service to the district’s health infrastructure.

Community Role

As one of only two major government blood banks in the district, the Malda District Hospital Blood Bank plays a central role in meeting transfusion needs for rural hospitals and health centers across Malda. It also conducts periodic donation drives and awareness programs to encourage voluntary blood donation.
